How Much Representation Is ‘Enough’
This article discusses queer representation and addresses those who say that overrepresentation is an issue in media now, due to queer people being a minority and in the media a higher percentage of people are represented as queer in comparison to real life. This video questioned whether representation in fiction needs to be accurate and says that representation of queer people does not take away from representation of heterosexual people and that queer stories are not only relatable to queer audiences as people are multifaceted and so is the media featuring queer characters. The opinion stated in this video is that arguments of overrepresentation and individuals asking for less queer representation is thinly veiled homophobia.
500 Days of Summer: Postmodern perfection
This video discusses the 2009 movie 500 Days of Summer as a postmodern text. It has inspired me to watch it and it helped me further understand Baudrillards theory of postmodernism in the context of a real media text.
Media Magazine Promising Young Woman article:
This article from the Media Magazine focuses on Emerald Fennel's 2020 rape-revenge movie starring Carrie Bradshaw. It talks about its context in terms of the hashtag MeToo movement in 2017 and how the film is interesting as it can provoke a wide range of responses due to its story of a woman embracing her rage and fustration after being sexually assaulted, but ultimately spoiler killed by Al, her assaulter. Something that I found interesting about the film that was not mentioned in the article was the choice of casting famous 'nice guys' to play the roles of the men who treat Cassie badly, such as comedian Bo Burnham. I found this article really interesting and also found that much of what it covered related to representation theories, especially how men and women bodies are represented and how female sexuality is used within the movie as a weapon of revenge.
